GM Hikaru Nakamura wins the 2009 U.S. Chess Championship!

Hikaru defeated GM Josh Friedel in a Two Knights Defense, which lasted only 22 moves.

This is a great accomplishment considering that this U.S. Championship, in my opinion, was the strongest ever.

Congratulations to GM Nakamura!

Round 4

“Today’s video diary feature IM Irina Krush. Irina has put in a very strong perfomance and talks to the ICC’s John Henderson about her game, Saint Louis, club founder Rex Sinquefield and much more. Irina could potentially move one step closer toward the title of Grand Master, with currently less than 1% of the world’s title holders being female this is a significant feat. Good Luck Irina”

“The player day off didn’t translate into a day off for the club as local students participating in the CCSCSL outreach education programs from 2 city schools arrived to square off for a team tournament. CCSCSL’s Matt Lodge offers insight into the value of chess in schools! Enjoy, and don’t miss all the live coverage of the US Chess Championship here in Saint Louis.”

Round 3

“Varuzhan Akobian squares off against America’s greatest chess players in the US Chess Championship 2009 at the new Chess Club and Scholastic Center Saint Louis. Recently featured on MTV’s “I’m a Genius!” and starting his own designer apparel line “Endgame” Akobian is keeping himself busy on and off the board. An exciting player we wish him the best as he seeks to redefine public opinion of professional chess players.”

Round 2

Round 1

“A time lapse video from Round 1 of the US Chess Championship featuring New York’s Gata Kamsky vs Varuzhan Akobian.”

“Tony Rich, Director of the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, talks about the weekends events with Grand Master Jennifer Shahade over a quick but brutal game of chess.”
